Woodblock Weekend: Relief Printmaking for Beginners and Beyond
Taught by Joe Marshall
Friday, 6–9 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10 am–4 pm
Section A: July 15 – 17

Section B: August 19 – 21

Fee: $165 (Associates $150)

Here is a great time to try your hand at the one of the oldest forms of printmaking, the Woodcut. Using very basic tools and a straight forward process there are an endless variety of works that can be produced. Another strength of printmaking is that the same image can be repeated. This can be in the traditional sense as in a numbered edition, or using multiple impressions on different surfaces and with different effects.

Are you Intrigued by woodblock? Or a little bit hooked, and itching to try it again? This workshop is the perfect opportunity to learn and practice the basic techniques of woodblock and try your hand at designing, cutting, and printing a woodblock print. You can take this class without having to buy a bunch of tools, inks, paper, all supplies included.

Call The Drawing Studio for more information 520-620-0947 0r go to http://www.thedrawingstudio.org/ to sign up online.

So last weekend I taught at The Drawing Studio an Introduction to woodcut and had a great time, plus my students did some kick-butt work many of them first cutters. so here is a small sample of work.

Here is a two block/two color rolled at the same time by Anita Goss. All the blocks in this post are 6″x6″.

Printed with gold ink by C. Seskus, a great use of negative space and filling the block, this was one of many variations of this block.

Also by C. Seskus a two color block rolled on the same block and printed in one go, gotta love the blend/fade on this.

This is one of the many prints on cloth GG did, who is also a awesome quilter. This block kept changing the way it looked by what ink/paper/cloth was used.

Finally here is Robert Howard’s work, Rob’s first time printing and he just started to take drawing classes at TDS last year and can’t stop go ROB!

I would have add more images but some folks took their prints home before I could photograph them. Guys keep that work up so people can see it.

I admit I had a lot of fun.

So here are some photos of the studio as I get ready for Southern Graphics and my Show at Fragment Gallery, details to follow.

Here is my desk, for some reason when I clean up I get all fung shway on it. You can see tools of the trade along with a bokken I broke. This will soon be part of an installation.

Here is a close-up. The chinese characters read “Farewell to the Metal Tiger”, and a big wad of “Hell Bank” notes for all my ancestors.

I got to say I enjoy my flat file. I was given to me, Thanks Simon Donovan, I cleaned it up, and painted it. Now it has a new life, aww, such a touching story. (sniff sniff)

By the way the wall is straw bale, plastered with mud and the “window” is made from bottles.

This is what the studio looks like after a day of printing, ¡They’re GREAT!

I”ll post more as things move along. PEACE
